Anabolic steroids have widespread effects on the body and its internal systems, so it’s not surprising that aside from their potential effect on muscle growth, they can harm other cells and organs. In the School of Sport, Exercise, and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Birmingham, we are currently investigating psychosocial factors that facilitate the use of PIED. This work has shown that across a range of populations (e.g., bodybuilders, sportsmen, legal steroids sale adolescent gym goers), users of PIED utilise six such mechanisms to rationalise their PIED use. A drug or other substance is tightly controlled by the UK government because it may be abused or cause addiction.
