Body dysmorphia and steroid use on the rise

This means that supplying someone else, even your friends, can get you up to 14 years in prison, an unlimited fine or both. Image and performance-enhancing drugs (IPEDS) are becoming widely used in the UK, predominantly by young men, as a convenient and readily-obtainable means of obtaining the widely-advertised body shape. Anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS’s) have become the performance enhancing “drugs of choice”.

Most worrying is a recent trend towards increased use by teenage boys, not for gains in athletic performance, but to facilitate the development of a larger and more defined musculature. Androgenic-anabolic steroids (AAS) have been used to enhance athletic performance since the 1940s, but some of the health risks of steroid abuse have only recently come to light. Anabolic steroids have widespread effects on the body and its internal systems, so it’s not surprising that aside from their potential effect on muscle growth, they can harm other cells and organs. That’s why regular health screening and blood testing is so important.

Global Health Challenges

In the School of Sport, Exercise, and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Birmingham, we are currently investigating psychosocial factors that facilitate the use of PIED. This work has shown that across a range of populations (e.g., bodybuilders, sportsmen, legal steroids sale adolescent gym goers), users of PIED utilise six such mechanisms to rationalise their PIED use. Also, our recent work has shown that adolescent male PIED users are more adept at using these mechanisms – and use them more frequently – than matched non-users.

  • Often he can put two and two together based on their appearance and the kinds of symptoms they’re experiencing, he explains.
  • Little blue pills can help overcome ED problems and some athletes use them to ‘flush’ steroids from their body.
  • “Young men are willing to be a bit riskier with their own health at 18 than they are at 38.
  • ‘I know lads that will never take steroids again, but now they have to take viagra every time.
  • ‘More often than not, people don’t want to come off, because you get physically smaller.

A drug or other substance is tightly controlled by the UK government because it may be abused or cause addiction. The Misuse of Drugs Act (MDA) 1971 established the system by which illicit drugs or controlled substances are classified. Its fundamental purpose is to provide a regulatory framework which controls the availability of, and access to, certain substances. Anabolic steroids have limited medical uses and are not the same as corticosteroids, a different type of steroid drug that is more commonly prescribed.

(One study found men who use steroids have a 90% chance of becoming sterile). “But what people seem less aware of is the other, possibly more serious, stuff – the mental health problems, high cholesterol, risk of blood clots, heart problems and heart attacks,” he adds. Most metabolism of anabolic steroids occurs in the liver which is therefore prone to damage.

Some users gradually increase the dose of anabolic steroids to a peak, then reduce the amount; this is known as Pyramiding. Users also frequently combine several different types of anabolic steroids in a process known as “stacking”. Here, two or more anabolic steroids are taken at the same time, using oral and injectable products, for example.

What’s the Difference Between Steroids and SARMs?

Anabolic steroids such as testosterone are performance-enhancing hormones that increase muscle mass and boost athletic ability, which has led to their misuse and abuse by some, and men in particular. However, the use of steroids has some life-limiting and serious side effects including reduced sperm count, erectile dysfunction, baldness, breast development and an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and liver or kidney failure. Despite this steroid misuse persists, a 2014 study estimated that worldwide 3.3% of the population or 6.4% of the male population are abusing steroids.

Problems with their body image can cause some women to have plastic or intimate surgery because they feel their bodies aren’t good enough. By current estimates, between 400,000 and one million people in the UK use IPEDs. The majority are men in their early 20s, but men and women of all ages use them.

Sildenafil citrate, a form of anabolic steroid, was originally developed by the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. Pfizer decided to begin selling it under the brand name Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction; it increases blood flow to the penis. When Pfizer’s patent ended in 2013, it became legal for other companies to develop and market their own versions of sildenafil citrate.

Mental health risks associated with anabolic steroids

Although there is not enough evidence to connect chronic anabolic steroid use with substance dependence, the positive psychological effects experienced by many users appear to reinforce the continuing use of steroids for some users. Founder Aaron Carnahan travels around gyms in the Midlands and works alongside Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust offering expert advice on image and performance-enhancing drugs, including safer alternatives. Experts agree that steroids are mainly being bought online or shared between gym members, which means people don’t always know exactly what they’re putting into their bodies. Gittins, from Addaction – which provides free drug testing and injecting equipment – says drugs are often mislabelled and turn out not to be what an individual is expecting.
